Dental tips for the holidays

Borders are opened now and we are thrilled we can go for a holiday after the year long isolation at home for COVID-19.

Yes, What makes a holiday good apart from new exciting experience with new environment and local fascinating cultures? The delicious delicacies, street food and local cuisines! Some holidays are planned around celebrations like birthdays and anniversaries.

Nevertheless, it’s important to prioritize your oral health during this time as well. So here are five dental tips to bear in mind this holiday season to keep your teeth and gums healthy and happy.

5 Dental tips for the holidays:

  1. Stay clear of soda Some may prefer a cultural holiday while some may prefer a vacation under the tropical sun or even the exotic Sahara weather. It is simply easy to order soda to quench your thirst. However beware and try to control the amount of Soda that’s in contact with your teeth, we would want to protect our teeth while having fun. If you have to take soda, try drinking it with a straw to keep the acidity away from your teeth..
  2. Drink wine moderately
In our culture, wine is now often a custom for celebration. Drinking wine has its own health benefits. Red wine stains more than white wine. You may pair your reds with food and brush well to reduce the stains.
  3. Don’t use your teeth as a tool.
Our teeth often do look like the perfect tool especially when our hands are full or cut something when we don’t have the correct tools handy, doing so can damage or even break your teeth!
Don’t use your teeth to open things. Using your teeth to open things such as bottles, envelopes, or plastic packages is not a good idea because you can crack or chip your teeth. These activities are also dangerous to your gums; if you are opening something and it slides, it can cut your gum. You can end up permanently damaging your teeth and might need dental crowns, veneers, fillings, or even dental implants. Using your teeth as scissors can also cause them to become weak; cracks in your teeth can increase the risk of infection.
  4. Brush your teeth regularly
If you expect to be travelling during the holidays, make sure to bring a dental kit so you never miss your routine. Just by dedicating a few minutes to oral cavity hygiene after every meal, you can prevent multiple dental and gingival problems. This can ensure that you avoid unnecessary trips to the dentist during and after your travels.
  5. Use dental floss and keep some floss handy
Another pro tip, especially during the holiday season, is to keep some dental floss in your bag or pocket. Not only is it a great idea to pop into the bathroom for a quick floss after meals, but you’ll also be totally prepared if you have an unfortunate spinach dip situation, or something else stuck in your teeth when you’re trying to socialize at the company Christmas party.

To complete this list of dental tips for the holidays, remember to schedule a post vacation dental check up appointment with your dentist.
